Compline, or “Prayers as Night Falls,” is a beautiful service which marks the end of the day in the Christian tradition. The service is contemplative in nature and emphasizes “the peace which passes all understanding” (Philippians 4:7). The English word compline is derived from the Latin completorium, as compline is the completion of the working day. The word was first used in this sense at the beginning of the 6th century.

Begun in monastic settings, the prayers were chanted using plainsong chant or Gregorian chant. We use plainsong chant from the David Hurd setting found in our The Hymnal 1982, with choral responses from a wide-range of composers.

According to The Compline Underground website (https://complineunderground.wordpress.com/where-to-experience-compline/ ), St. Clare’s is only one of three locations in the state of Georgia to offer Choral Compline on a routine basis.

The Choral Compline is under the direction of Henry Batten. For more information, or to join the ensemble, please contact Henry at hbatten1950@gmail.com.
